Dr. Aruna Mohan completed her undergraduate training in dentistry at the prestigious Madras Dental College affiliated to the University of Madras. A recipient of the ‘Colgate Certificate of Honour for Excellence’ in her second year and ‘JA Masilamani Prize for Medicine’ in her third year, she was placed University first in several subjects. She received the Colgate Gold Medal and the Best Outgoing Student Award - ‘The Dr. Sivarathna Savadi Prize’ and was also awarded the ‘Student Plaque Award’ from the International College of Dentists (India Section) for her outstanding achievements during her years of study at the Madras Dental College.
In her pursuit of academic excellence, she chose to do a residency program in Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine, Connecticut, USA with a full scholarship. Towards a Masters degree in Pediatric Dentistry she worked on a multi-factorial model for early childhood decay, under the guidance of Dr. Norman Tinanoff, a colossus in the field of childhood caries. This was followed by a fellowship at the University of Connecticut, USA, and a brief stint at the Royal London Hospital, London, before returning to India. She underwent further training in orthodontics under the aegis of Progressive Orthodontics, USA, mentored by Dr. Donald McGann, the creator of customized orthodontics.
In 2008, she instituted Tooth Fairy, a unique Dental Clinic in Chennai with a mission to create awareness about children’s dentistry. Tooth Fairy, a child’s delight, provides comprehensive dental treatment to children in an ambience of colour, comfort and care, helping dispel fear of the dentist’s chair. She adopts a state-of-the-art orthodontic diagnostic system that offers customized orthodontic treatment with emphasis on growth management.
Dr. Aruna, an ardent advocate of dental health in children has been instrumental in creating awareness among pediatricians about children’s dental problems. She conducts field trips for school children to stress the importance of healthy teeth. She is passionate about treating children with special needs and medical problems and offers comprehensive dental care in coordination with other specialists. She hopes to take the concepts of fear-free pediatric dentistry to more and more children in a bid to create a generation of bright smiles and self-assured children.
Married to a physician who specializes in infectious diseases, she has two sons and resides in Chennai, India.
